INSIGHT THERAPY Acupuncture & Traditional Chinese Medicine
Janice Tucker
After talking to people about my work as a practitioner of Traditional Chinese medicine they often tell me they had no idea of the range of health complaints which can be helped by this system of medicine. The answers to the questions below provide more information about the range of benefits of acupuncture and Chinese medicine, what to expect from a consultation session and the many conditions which can benefit from treatment.
How does Acupuncture work? Acupuncture treatment involves the insertion of very fine, sterilised, disposable stainless steel needles into specific points along a pathway of energy (Qi) flow. Stimulation of the points clears blockages and encourages the normal flow of Qi which in turn restores the person’s health by bringing everything in the body back into balance. How can I benefit from Acupuncture? Firstly, Acupuncture is a drug free therapy that has no side effects. Its holistic approach means that it can treat the underlying cause of the disease as well as the symptoms, thereby allowing health to return to its true potential. It can also be used to assist in the prevention of disease and the maintenance of general well-being.
The initial consultation can last anything between 30 and 60 minutes. TCM utilises very unique, non-invasive methods for diagnosing a condition. On the first visit a detailed medical history is taken. To obtain more information other diagnostic methods are used such as taking the pulse and looking at the tongue. These ancient techniques can reveal much information about the physical and emotional state of your health. Based on the diagnosis the practitioner will be able to decide upon a course of treatment that is exactly tailored to fit the individual’s condition. The treatment method can be acupuncture with a combination of other therapies such as herbal medicine and advice on specific diet, exercise and lifestyle habits. Also it may be appropriate to teach some Qi Gong (Chinese breathing and relaxation exercises). Subsequent treatment sessions generally take place weekly and last between 30 and 40 minutes. Who can TCM treat? TCM can be used effectively to treat people of all ages from very young babies to the elderly. Acupuncture treatments are extremely effective for many digestive disorders in babies. Pregnant women can avail of treatment at any stage of their pregnancy. For example, acupuncture can be very effective in the treatment of morning sickness. Also many breathing and therapeutic exercises can help relax and strengthen the woman before, during and after the pregnancy.
